Literacy and ESOL Reading Dr. Richards July hrade, Introduction: Rationale Understanding and appreciating biographies is an important skill that all students should master. Biographies provide information about people who have accomplished many things in their lifetime. They allow a person to be remembered over time after he is long gone. Reading about important people from other cultures also allows students a more global understanding of the world.
It also allows English learners more opportunity to relate to what they are learning about. This unit plan is designed for a third grade classroom containing emergent, intermediate, biographg advanced English Language Learners ELLs.
The duration of this unit is two weeks. During this time, students will be involved in a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Students will read a variety of biographies about different people with very different accomplishments.
Students will read biographies on their instructional level and before, during, and after reading strategies will be used throughout the unit. Because not all students will read the same biographies, they will sampke informational posters to teach their classmates about the person they researched and read about. In a typical biography unit, students are instructed to research and write about a famous person. Students should be aware of the accomplishments of important people. Recently, students were asked to select one piece of trade to be placed in their permanent writing portfolios, which travel with them to each grade level. Knowing how much students were able to achieve from this unit tells me that it was successful, and I should continue using this writing activity in my sample biography 3rd grade. These students may not have had the opportunity to learn about the accomplishments of famous important people, particularly those who shaped biograhy face of America.
Also, these students would have bography opportunity to share part of their family history with classmates. My students were very proud to tell about their relatives, and this would be a wonderful opportunity for any ESOL student to feel a sense of pride as well.
Some ELLs may not feel comfortable being different from their classmates, but this unit allows them to recognize that being different is unique. Using this lesson would also meet TESOL Standard 3: Planning, Implementing, and Managing Instruction. This standard indicates that candidates will know, understand and use standards-based practices and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing ESL and content instruction, including classroom organization, teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills, and choosing and adapting classroom resources.
ELL students will be accommodated in small groups, and their language proficiency will be taken into consideration in determining how their writing will occur. Student motivation is very high within this unit. Conducting an interview provides authentic practice grqde speaking and writing English. This would allow the unit to meet standard 3. This would help prepare them for the final presentation of their own biography to their classmates.
Websites and the Timeliner software are also additional resources to use for ELLs. Overall, this unit would be an effective and useful set of activities for both ELL and mainstream students in any classroom.
